Deconstruction of the Piano
CD Standard Formats 3m30s, 2011
Artist:Ying-Jung Chen
Deconstruction of the Piano derives from a variety of piano performance techniques: pizzicato, percussion, weak percussion and heavy strike. For percussion and weak percussion, two different pitches are recorded. The editing process employs various effects: FFT, VST, delay, retro, remix, echo, granular mix, etc. Original recordings are manipulated and injected with new elements and are later rearranged.
As the title Deconstruction of the Piano implies, the creative philosophy and goal of this installation is to deconstruct piano sounds in various ways to create varieties. It runs against ordinary people’s perception and impression of piano sounds that they claim they are so familiar with. It also encourages audience to explore the richer side of piano in its original sounds.
