Lost Path Islands
Video Installation, Length 6m00s, 2011
Artist:Mores Zhan
The landscape of this island is created in a theatrical fashion. The background windows sky moves in a theatrically steady pace, and the island is portrayed as a mechanical object cruising coldly in an ocean. At the center of the scene is a virtual artificial island city. The viewing angle shifts slowly to create the lock illusion of viewer moving alongside the island. This is an island of symbols made up cityscapes of world-famous cities. It symbolizes the advent of an empty culture due to people’s loss of direction and tells the predicament of mankind failing to find a port to dock.
The installation actualizes the artist’s concept for image extension. Distancing effects help create a landscape installation showing a place of “nowhere”. A fixed but floating sea surface and theatrical stage settings moving mechanically help build images that make up the entire landscape. In a very concrete way, it challenges our habitual way of looking at images and TV content. A seaborne city, seemingly in a cruising mode, is on a journey of no progression.
