Generative Glass
2013 Glass, Wood

“Generative-Glass” is an experimental research program designed to investigate the evolving role of glass as a physical material in the fields of design, art, and architecture. This program also aims to explore the correlation between glass and new computational, interactive, and fabrication production processes. Compared to most materials used in contemporary architectural design, glass is less manageable due to various factors such as its material attributes, production process, assembly logic, and customization cost that are directly associated with the production and fabrication of glass works. Through the collaboration between the artists and the glass industrial technology during the creation process, the participants designed their drafts by applying the techniques of digital generation and parameter setting. Then they produced the molds and the prototypes of their glass works with digitally controlled machines. They created unique glass works that have special forms and elaborate structures, through which they challenged the physical limit of glass.
