Treasure Hill Traveler’s Hostel

Creation of Place

As the Swiss architect Mario Botta contended, the ultimate spirit of a building’s placement in a locality is that it must possess the functions of both continuity and rupture, creating a form that encompasses the locality’s past and embodies its changing appearance. Treasure Hill Traveler’s Hostel is founded on “creating a locality.” Taking into consideration such factors as the local architectural history, topography and natural climate, it aims to step beyond time, attaining a balance between memory and current reality, as a perfectly fitting expression, not an impetuous act.

At the same time itsobjective is to effect an interpenetrating, composite, reciprocal action, through rational thought, fully demonstrating the Confucian ideal of “complete sincerity” in pursuit of the Middle Path, and allowing culture and nature to be planted here side by side.

Place is an attempt to ruminate on the mutually beneficial symbiosis of nature and technology, from a traveler’s hostel located in a historical community. At the same time, through technology’s deductive verification of the locality’s evolving essence, it hopes to achieve a small yet concrete self-realization of the spirit of place, through the intermingling of new and old.
