Partita 1 for viola and live electronic effects is a cutting-edge project that brings together the talents and skills of GRAME (National Centre for New Music), the IRCAM, the composer Philippe Manoury and viola-player Christophe Desjardins.
The work uses an innovatory technique whereby the player’s body movements are transformed into sound. This technique heralds a new era in the field of mixed music by enabling performers to interact with the electronic input and control certain parameters by the way they play.
Partita 1 was a GRAME commission first performed in March 2007 in Villeurbanne during the “Journées GRAME 07 festival”.
“Driven by the intense bow-work of Christophe Desjardins, the major work lasting 45 minutes underscores Philippe Manoury’s talent for defining musical form. In seven, each of which is a sound expression, listeners are led through an experience that is both exciting and in a clear form. Rarely have real-time electronics and a traditional instrument engaged in such hand-to-hand combat.” La Lettre du Musicien magazine.
