The Aura of the Digital Taipei
The world has stepped in to a digital era at the turn of the third millennium; innovative technology has brought us overwhelmingly innovative experience in the political, economic, social and cultural fields. Enormous flows of information have subverted the conventional role of media and blurred the boundaries between humanity and nature, humanity and machines, even between individual human beings. Through digital media, our imagination is freed from all restraint.
Digital technology is beyond the limitations of time and space, and is able to mix the real and the virtual, providing the ultimate medium and endless possibilities for art creators. Over the past three decades, diverse applications in the creative arts have made digital art a celebrated category of art creation. Through technology, artists are more audacious in exploring the issues from physical sensations to revolutionary social improvements, and, consciously or unconsciously, incorporating digital art into life, markets and the consumer culture. In the long run, it gradually transforms the perspective of high technology industries.
In order to make good use of the dynamics of digital technology in Taiwan, to integrate resources in art creation and to take the helm of digital art in Chinese world, the Department of Cultural Affairs has devoted three years to the establishment of the Taipei Digital Art Center and one year for the inauguration of the Taipei Digital Art Festival. Such institutions and events are aimed at changing the stereotypical image of digital art as computer graphics with animated artworks. Taipei, a rising Mediacity, a new hub of digital art, will surprise people with its great creativity and imagination provided by artists.
This event demonstrates the abundant, diverse and open culture of Taipei through digital art; furthermore, on the global digital art map, it is the spark that lights of the aura of Taipei.
