“Gender Swap”

“Gender Swap” is the latest installment of the series of works produced by the project “the Machine to be ‘Another’”, an ongoing interdisciplinary open-source research on embodiment and empathy, inspired by recent findings in neuroscience and virtual reality. It is a system composed of two head-mounted displays on which first person cameras are mounted, through which perspectives are swapped. Meant to be experienced by two people of different gender, it is intended as an intimate and respectful exploration of gender identity. With the system, participants are invited to synchronize movements and explore the other’s body through touch and movement. The experience only works if both users are in constant agreement, thus creating a shared experience that depends on the ability of two people to empathize.
